Excellence In Concrete Award
A beautiful custom home in Bend was honored recently at the Oregon Concrete and Aggregates Producers Association (OCAPA) Excellence in Concrete awards banquet in Portland, Located in the exclusive North Rim neighborhood in Southwest Bend on a one-of-a-kind lot that has encompassing views of the Cascade Mountains, The Houston Residence was the first place award winner in the Residential ICF (Insulating Concrete Forms) division.
ICF’s were utilized in the construction of both the exterior and interior walls with special attention given to the radius walls. The ICF block was also used for the foundation stem walls and is retaining 10 feet of grade throughout the eastern side of the basement. The home is also nestled in a hillside to maximize the thermal properties of total ICF construction. Because of the extensive use of ICF throughout this project, the homeowner can look forward to lower utility bills and a home with maximum sound deadening qualities. Approximately 995 cubic yards of concrete was required to complete this project. Both the Insulating Concrete Forms and Concrete used in this project were supplied by Hooker Creek Companies, LLC of Bend.
The Houston Residence was built with the greatest of craftsmanship at all stages of construction with special attention given when framing the intricate arches on the west side of the residence. Arcades on both the basement and main floors were essential design elements to preserve the integrity of the Mediterranean style of the home.
On the outside of the home, ChemRock was used as a structural concrete retaining wall on the east side of the residence and was placed along a 140 feet long cut. It is approximately 17 feet high at the highest point. This product is typically used in commercial settings (zoos, pools etc.) to simulate real boulders. The ChemRock was inventively used in this project to simultaneously retain and beautify the residential site where gradual retaining walls were not feasible. The finished ChemRock product was artistically stained to mimic native boulders and blends into the site without the untrained eye being able to recognize its real material!
The Houston Residence is a prime example of how you can have a beautiful, artistic custom home while at the same time taking advantage of the many advantages of designing and building a home utilizing Insulating Concrete Forms!
