Deer Ridge Correctional Institution

PROJECT: Deer Ridge Correctional Institution - Madras, OR
GENERAL CONTRACTOR: Hoffman Construction for the 1240-bed medium security facility and Kirby Nagelhout Construction for the 864-bed minimum security facility
COMPLETION:  Medium-security facility November 2007, Miniumum-security facility September 2007

madras-prisonI.jpgDESCRIPTION: Hoffman Construction of Portland built the 1,240-bed medium security facility and Kirby Nagelhout of Bend was the contractor for the 864-bed minimum-security facility.

madras-prison3.jpgDeer Ridge was originally slated to open December of 2006, but due to legislative delays the completion date for the minimum-security facility as September 2007, and the medium security institution was completed by November 2007.  The $191 million complex, with its combined 2,104 beds, is the second largest in Oregon, just behind Ontario’s Snake River facility which has 3,000 beds.  According to Dave Vogt from Hooker Creek’s asphalt & paving group, “It’s not very often that we get to bid a site paving project of this size, particularly out of the Madras site.  So just the shear size of the project makes it exciting for both our crews and myself.  The two biggest challenges so far have been; First of all…the schedule.  There was a very tight schedule on this project and since we are one of the last subcontractors on the site it was very important the we were there when R&G Excavation needed us to be, so that we would not impact their schedule."

"Secondly, coordinating the phasing of the project.  We had to keep their only access road open and work closely behind R&G’s grading crews to keep on schedule with the phasing required on this project.  R&G did a very impressive job of working late nights and through Labor Day weekend to keep ahead of our paving crews.  We had to bring in Bryan Furry’s paving crew the Tuesday after Labor Day weekend, due to the fact that Brett Hamrick’s crew who started the job, had to pave in Juntura to finish the bridge project for Wildish Construction.  Both crews did a very good job and this shows how diversified and interchangeable our paving crews can be,” said Vogt.

Upon completion of the prison, Hooker Creek was also called upon to pave Ashwood road, which leads from Madras to the prison.  We recently learned that this paving job has been named a finalist for a 2007 paving award.

Caldera Springs - Sunriver Oregon - Listed as one of the top 20 Construction Projects in Central Oregon in 2007.

Caldera Springs is the newest destination resort in Sunriver, Oregon.  Construction on the 400 acre resort that includes several man made lakes, walking paths, tennis and sports courts and the Caldera Links golf course designed by Bob Cupp began in early 2006 and was completed in late 2007.  Hooker Creek's Civil Construction Division was responsible for approximately 75% of the infrastructure work for this project including installing water lines, sewer lines and utilities.  Our paving Division also did all of the paving for this multi million dollar project.  The total value for Hooker Creek's portion of this project was approximately $7 million.
