Local Projects Win Big
Two Central Oregon construction projects received top honors at the annual Excellence in Concrete Awards presentation.
The highly visible Mill Quarter in Bend was the first place winner in the very competitive Commercial Insulating Concrete Forms (ICF) category. Commercial building projects from all over the State of Oregon and Southwest Washington were included in this category and all three finalists were from Central Oregon. Other finalists included GGL Architecture and Franklin Crossing.
The unique design and extensive use of ICF were contributing factors in the Mill Quarter being named the top project in this category. At the time the Mill Quarter was under construction, it was the largest ICF project in the United States! The 40,000 square foot project utilized approximately 30,000 ICF blocks and over 2,500 yards of concrete. In deciding to use ICF in the construction of the Mill Quarter, the owner took into account the many benefits of building with ICF’s including increased energy efficiency, and low maintenance. Another benefit to building with ICF is the sound deadening quality and with the Mill Quarter being in an area with heavy traffic volume, this was absolutely essential to the success of this project.
In addition to the Excellence in Concrete Award, The Mill Quarter received the top award nationally in it’s category from the Insulating Concrete Form Association and also received the Green Building Award in the 2007 COBA Tour of Homes.
The construction team for the Mill Quarter consisted of: Mill Quarter Properties, Owner/Developer, Ang Engineering, Structural Engineer, HSW Builders, General Contractor, GGL Architecture, Architectural Firm, Stephen Perrault Construction, Concrete Contractor and Hooker Creek Companies, Ready Mix Supplier. Congratulations to the entire Mill Quarter team.
In the Parking Structure category, Bend’s Centennial Parking Plaza walked away with the top honors. When the city decided to move forward with the construction of Bend’s first parking plaza they outlined four primary objectives which included a high aesthetic quality, an open layout that was “friendly” to users. It needed to be a durable and long lasting structure and it needed to be designed in a way that minimal maintenance would be required. The design and construction teams went to work and achieved all of these objectives and more!
The construction team for Centennial Parking Plaza included; Cary Kopczynski & Company, Civil/Structural Engineer, City of Bend, Owner/Developer, Yost Grube Hall, Architectural Firm, R and H Construction, General Contractor, Marion Construction, Concrete Contractor, Salem Concrete Paving, Concrete Finishing Company and Hooker Creek Companies, Ready Mix Supplier.
In addition to the two first place winners, Central Oregon had several construction projects named as finalists in various categories. Excellence in Concrete finalists from Central Oregon included: GGL Architecture and Franklin Crossing in the ICF Commercial category. In the residential, single category two Central Oregon homes were finalists. The Arney residence in Culver placed second and an ICF home in Pronghorn placed third in this division and The Plaza Condominiums in Bend was the third place finisher in the Residential Multi category.
